| The Guild of the Urban League of Essex County
The Guild is the volunteer auxiliary of the Urban League. In existence for more than 63 years, Guild members donate their time to deliver services that extend public understanding and support of the National Urban League and its programs.
Guilders participate in fundraising and help to develop the leadership skills of ordinary individuals by engaging them in local community issues.
Typical Guild activities include serving as staff for major Urban League fundraising events, such as the Annual Dinner, working as mentors and tutors, and assisting with projects as needed by the Urban League.
Guilders range in age from 45 to 95 and are active in our programs and services. Considered to be an important part of the Urban League movement, Guilders contribute thousands of volunteer hours annually and play a valuable role in connecting the Urban League to communities.
Started in 1942 by Mrs. Mollie Moon, the National Urban League Guild was organized in 1952. The Urban League Guild in Newark began in 1945 under the leadership of Mrs. Leonard D. Savoy of Montclair, and within its first decade had raised $30,000 for Urban League programs. The Guild organized shows, theatre parties, luncheons, lectures, seminars, dinners, and such illustrious events as the Sammy Davis, Jr. Variety Show and a book-and-author session with Langston Hughes.
