“The Urban League Child Development Center is a wonderful school. I was so happy to find a place where I could bring my daughter. I’m looking forward to continuing my relationship with the school because of the high standards they set for our children. My daughter is excelling in kindergarten and I owe it all to the Urban League.”
-Ms. Pierre, parent of a Summer Enrichment Program student

Job Readiness for Teens
Preparing our children for success in life means preparing them to fully participate in the workforce.
The Urban League of Essex County provides direct job readiness training and ongoing support for at-risk Newark high school students to get and keep summer jobs. In addition to the income that summer jobs provide, early employment experiences teach important life skills and can be a powerful tool in establishing positive attitudes and values toward work.
Recent research has confirmed what we have known all along. As reported by the Center for Labor Market Studies and the Brookings Institute, the importance of summer jobs, particularly for disadvantaged youth, extends well beyond the summer. Positive early work experiences are directly linked to less justice involvement, higher graduation rates, better future employment prospects and higher earnings later in life.
