For one hundred years the Urban League of Essex County (“League”) has been at the forefront of advocating for and providing support to families with limited resources. When the League was founded it was critically important to address fundamental human needs at a time when discrimination restricted access to social services. While social services remain an important part of our work, social change requires stronger collaborations with private, public and community partners. We seek these partnerships based on shared values to advance equity and opportunity.
“Empowering Communities. Changing Lives” is a call to action for the League to lead our communities to self-suciency. Through our community revitalization initiatives, development of commercial and residential properties, wealth building and nancial literacy, employment training, home ownership preparation, and educational support and opportunities for youth and young adults, the League has impact.
The celebration of our Centennial provides a moment to reect on how far we’ve come, and an opportunity to chart a course of action for the future. To achieve enduring, positive change in our community, we need a truly transformative agenda. We must increase our investments in our community and become not just recipients of benevolence, but partners in community building; not merely reacting to change, but becoming change agents; not just followers of political leaders, but advocates shaping political agendas.
It is our hope that you will join us in this movement. Help us chart a course for the next 100 years!
