We are committed to nurturing, loving, and teaching the children charged to our care the important cognitive and social skills needed to make Kindergarten and beyond a meaningful and enjoyable experience. Our program is licensed by the State of New Jersey to provide quality services to children aged 36 months to 12 years old.

Child Care Center Mission Statement

The Urban League of Essex County Child Development Center is dedicated to providing our families an environment in which they feel safe and comfortable; our students an education that will exceed all expectations and be a constant reinforcement of learning for years to come, and our staff the opportunity to embrace each child as a unique person with an individual pattern and timing of social, emotional, physical and intellectual development.

Curriculum Description

Your child will begin building an academic foundation through the Creative Curriculum for Preschool Goals and Objectives. It is implemented in two parts. Part one is the curriculum framework which focuses on the following:

  • How Children Develop and Learn
  • The Learning Environment
  • What Children Learn
  • The Teacher’s Role
  • The Family’s Role

The framework for Creative Curriculum is based on developmentally appropriate practices. Simply put, developmentally appropriate practice means teaching in ways that match the way children develop and learn. Part two of the curriculum applies the framework to the eleven areas that can be found in each classroom:

  • Blocks
  • Dramatic Play
  • Art
  • Toys & Games
  • Library
  • Discovery
  • Cooking
  • Music & Movement
  • Computers
  • Outdoors
  • Sand & Water

By participating in the regular schedule of activities, students will have the opportunity to develop the skills they need to be successful in kindergarten, such as: independence, strategic planning, critical thinking skills, and problem solving. They will also be able to use these skills in the real world.

Hours of Operation

The Child Development Center is open from 7:30am to 6:00pm. The academic school year follows the district calendar from September thru June. Additional care is also provided on non federal holidays and during the summer months.

Benefits of Preschool

New Jersey far surpasses the U.S. average in the percentage of children enrolled in public or private preschool. High-quality programs have certified teachers, full 6-hour days and maximum class size of 15.

Through a study conducted by NIEER, National Institute for Early Education Research, found that students that attend full day preschool for one or two years surpass students in kindergarten that have never attended preschool in many areas, including: attendance, oral language, early literacy and mathematics.  In general, a child that attends preschool will learn over 1,000 words more than a student that has not attended preschool.

Every year, the Urban League of Essex County Child Development Center works with 57 children vigorously to eliminate the achievement gap.  Teachers follow a very interactive curriculum that encourages independence and self discovery.  By the end of a student’s tenure with the Urban League of Essex County Child Development Center, he or she will reach developmentally appropriate milestones appropriate for their individual needs.
