Early Childhood Center

Our Commitment:
The Urban League of Essex County Early Childhood Center is dedicated to providing our students with an education that prepares them to exceed all expectations and instills a love of learning for years to come. We believe that education should be a meaningful and joyful experience, and we strive to maintain an environment where students and families feel safe and comfortable.

Our staff is dedicated to embracing each child as a unique person.  We work collaboratively with parents and stakeholders to ensure that our students' individual patterns and timing of social, emotional, physical and intellectual capacity are developed in ways that enable them to reach their their full potential.

Full Day Preschool

We are committed to developing the essential academic, cognitive and social skills that our children needed to excel in Kindergarten and beyond.  Our program is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and is licensed by the State of New Jersey to provide quality services to children from 2 1/2 years old.

The Early Childhood Center is open from 7:30am to 5:30pm, Mondays through Fridays and follows the Newark Public School District's academic calendar from September - June.  Wraparound care is available during the summer months.

We utilize the Creative Curriculum for Preschool Goals and Objectives to begin building a strong academic foundation for our students. Its curriculum framework is based on developmentally appropriate practices - stressing instruction and teaching in ways that match the way children develop and learn. The framework focuses on the following:

How Children Develop and Learn
The Learning Environment
What Children Learn
The Teacher’s Role
The Family’s Role

The curriculum framework is applied to eleven areas that can be found in each classroom:

Discovery Center
Dramatic Play
Music & Movement
Outdoor / Active Play
Sand & Water Play
Toys & Games

Our program is given in a math and literacy-rich environment and integrates social emotional skill development.   Our teachers follow a very interactive curriculum that encourages independence and self discovery.  Thus, our students not only gain a strong academic foundation, but develop character and habits of mind they need to be successful in school and in life - independence, strategic planning, problem solving and critical thinking skills.

By the time our students graduate from our program, they have reached or exceeded the developmental milestones appropriate for their individual needs.
