The Adolescent Parent Program provides pregnant, parenting and at risk adolescents in Essex County with comprehensive support services through an individualized case management system.

  • Mobilizes resources, increases alternatives available to this population.
  • Ameliorates logistical and communication problems experienced by many adolescents.
  • Targets youth under the age of 21 who are parents or about to become parents and lack adequate family support as well as those who have dropped out of school or are involved in the juvenile/criminal justice systems

Services

Participation and self advocacy are major activities emphasized with each client. Clients are expected to participate in all aspects of the program. Through counseling and interaction with program staff, clients learn how to advocate for themselves in the education, social service and criminal justice systems.  

 

SERVICES

DESCRIPTION

Case Management

  • Provides a coordinated structure with documenting and recording the client's progress toward jointly planned goals. Plans are modified to meet changing needs.

Family Life Skills Training

  • Special curriculum focusing on family life and independent living skills for pregnant adolescents and teenage parents. 
  • Allows and encourages clients to explore their own feelings.
  • Clients acquire knowledge and competencies needed for successful parenting and independent living.

Day Care

  • Assists clients in securing affordable and quality day care for their infants and toddlers.

Counseling

  • Individual, group and family counseling for adolescent parents and their families are conducted by LTI staff, auxiliary staff or may be referred locally to other agencies specializing in specific counseling needs.

Education

  • Liaison with local school district and other alternative programs which enables staff to provide a viable means for the client to return to school.
  • Staff assists client in the enrollment process and monitoring of client attendance and progress.

Employment

 

  • Provides clients with employment referral service utilizing community employment resources. 
  • Staff monitors client's progress on the job.
