Education Summit We know that in urban areas approximately 50% of the young people that enter high school will not graduate. This is a numbing statistic with chilling implications for the future of cities everywhere.
Concerned about this growing problem, The Urban League of Essex County hosts an annual education summit at Rutgers University in Newark. Several high schools in Essex County were asked to identify at least thirty-five 9th grade students who were identified to be at risk based on their results on the GEPA test. Ninth grade students from Orange H.S., Shabazz, Weequahic, Central, Barringer, Irvington attended the all-day event that included a number of important workshops on topics ranging from time management to goal setting. The Education Summit was a starting point in what will be an ongoing relationship with the attending schools.
