Our mission is to assist African American and other disadvantaged urban residents in the achievement of social and economic equality. We assist African-Americans and others to achieve self-sufficiency through economic and educational opportunities. In our 88 years, the Urban League of Essex County has provided training, assistance, and direction to thousands of African-Americans and others in the area. Throughout its long history The Urban League of Essex County has been able to meet new challenges with well-designed programs and policies relevant to changing social and economic conditions to help dependent people become independently productive. Our vision is social and educational equality for our youth, economic self-sufficiency for adults, safe communities and neighborhoods, civic involvement and responsibility, and racial inclusion.
We ensure that our youth are well educated and equipped for economic self-reliance in the 21st century by offering the best foundations for education and job skills possible through pre-school and after school programs, on-site tutoring in the housing projects, and on-site technology training in high-risk high schools.
We help adults attain economic self-sufficiency through good jobs, home ownership, entrepreneurship and financial literacy by offering seminars, study groups, job networking, remedial skills training, and technology training. We protect civil rights by eradicating all barriers to equal participation in the economic and social mainstream of America by offering seminars, community outreach events, voter education, and civic action opportunities. We improve the health of lower income communities by directing them to free and other health care and screening options. The ability of America’s racially diverse society to develop and use the human resources of all its citizens will determine the extent to which we will remain competitive in the global economy. The goal of the Urban League is to ensure that we as a people will be prepared for success in the years ahead. |
