Remedial Skills Program Many of the social ills that plague urban areas like Newark, Irvington, East Orange, and Orange are symptoms of the severe information and skills deficits that exist in the community at the neighborhood level. There are many skill-based training programs in Essex County. Sadly, however, thousands of individuals enroll in these programs not having the basic skills that serve as a prerequisite for entry. As a result, many students "graduate" from the respective programs not having acquired the skills for which they were trained. The Urban League of Essex County will address this problem by providing pre-employment basic skills training in math, English, appropriate language for the workplace, basic etiquette and interpersonal communications, effective time management, and goal setting. We recently received $100,00 from the State of New Jersey to assist us in our efforts. A disadvantaged adult or high school aged youth with severe basic skills deficits needs remedial skills training in order to be successful in a highly competitive work environment. In addition to providing intensive basic skills and remedial training such as math and language to all participants, this program will focus on and cultivate the other important communication and time management skills necessary for success. Our program will provide students with the basic skills that give them the confidence to succeed in subsequent skills-based training programs.
