Civil Rights and Racial Justice For 88 years The Urban League of Essex County has been at the forefront of the civil-rights movement in Newark, and we continue that leadership and advocacy role today. With key programs focused on empowering African-Americans to achieve equality in all aspects of American life, the League and its affiliates build the bridges that will close the equality gap for all people. We promote and ensure our civil rights by actively working to eradicate all barriers to equal participation in the all aspects of American society, whether political, economic, social, educational or cultural. We protect civil rights by eradicating all barriers to equal participation in the economic and social mainstream of America by offering seminars, community outreach events, voter education, and civic action opportunities.
