Volunteer Programs

I AM FAIRMOUNT

Canvassing is one of the Urban League’s most important community-based activities.  It is central to our mission to empower communities and change lives. That’s why the Urban League of Essex County is taking it to the streets!

We will be going door-to-door telling our story, and most importantly, hearing the stories of our neighbors and community members.

We want to know what you need, and work with you to develop effective strategies that help us solve the problems of our community.

But we can't do this alone.  We need your help.

If you are charged up to increase social justice, equity and opportunities for all, we want you to join our volunteer team!  You can help us tell our neighbors what the Urban League is up to, find out what their needs are, and bring about positive changes that empower them to improve their communities and change their own lives.

All community outreach canvassers receive thorough training that includes role-playing to learn how to deal with different situations. By the end of your training, you will know all about the mission, programs, services, and events offered by the Urban League.  You will also have increased your confidence in public speaking and gained valuable and transferable communication and data management skills.

MENTORING WORKS!

Share your strength with a young adult striving to reach their full potential.  Insights that you can give from your own life experience can connect and empower young people to change their lives for the better.

Quality mentoring relationships provide encouragement, wisdom, and lets young people know that they matter and that we care about them.   The League works with the Newark Mentoring Movement to provide you with training and best practices that support fulfilling mentoring relationships and a young person's capacity to be successful in life. It's a win-WIN for everyone!
